Secrets: No Such Thing

The other night I had a disturbing dream.

The most troubling part was not that I had traded my dedication to God and ministry for a life of crime; the worst part was that I was so bad at my newest pursuits (is that wrong for me to say?).

As I looked in on my life, I was a thief and a thug. One night when money was tight or boredom was intense, I went on a crime rampage with a couple of dark friends.

Being the intelligent and visionary criminals that we were (please remember that this was all a dream) we did not rob banks, armored cars, or steal high profile jewelry. No…we held up pawnshops—the mastermind equivalent of stealing from lemonade stands.

After three or four withdrawals, we ended up back at my home where we were greeted by a television detective (I have never seen his show, but I recognized him from the commercials), quickly handcuffed and led down to the station.

Turns out that I was not a good thief—I left too many clues and got caught quickly. Things that were supposed to be shaded and concealed were left exposed.

As I woke from my sleep and rehearsed my dream, I could not help but laugh. I was amused that my mind had wandered to a place so foreign and that even in my fantasy, I was no good at keeping secrets.

This is consistent with my history.

Exaggerations and deletions that were strategically intended to hide weakness, poor choices, or inconsistencies in my stories were always discovered. Eventually, the truth always came to the light.

Although I tried to master the art, I was not good at deception.

Want to know why?

It is because there is a spiritual law declaring, “there are no such things as secrets.”

They don’t exist.

Skeletons hidden in closets will be aired for the world to see.

Oh…it is possible to hide certain things from certain people for a short period of time. But, eventually, all things will be exposed.

What is done in secret (good, bad, or indifferent), will be known in public. And, the secrets that are tucked away into the recesses of a person’s life will end up defining them.

The Bible speaks clearly about this matter. “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” Luke 12:2-3

The only way to escape the embarrassment and humiliation of secrets exposed is to live your life as if there are no secrets. Don’t try to be clever…be clean. Don’t work to hide sinful actions and attitudes…live in the light and live righteously.

Live in the light as He is in the light…that is the only safe way to go.
