Exodus 33 records a piece of Jewish history. When Moses was leading the children of Israel, he took a tent and he set it outside the camp. It was unique and singular in its purpose. This tent was not there for social reasons, but for spiritual connection. Scripture records that when Moses and his young assistant, Joshua, wanted to inquire of the Lord they would go into the tent. The others around the camp would bow before their own tents while Moses was in the “Tent of Meeting”. God’s presence would show up, intimate communication would take place, and it so captivated Joshua that he would linger (Exodus 33:11).
This picture is still in effect today. God did not just send His son in order to purchase salvation and rescue us from hell; He sent Jesus to purchase for us a relationship that is relevant and meaningful. When Jesus died on the cross, he changed the rules. Now, we no longer have to have someone go to a sanctuary for us in order to connect with the God of creation, we can do that anywhere and anytime.
That is the promise of the practical presence of God that comes through a tent-relationship with God.
