I learned something yesterday while mowing my lawn. Actually, it is a truth that was not a revelation as much as a physical observation that vividly paints a spiritual picture. Here is what I discovered...
Growing weeds takes no effort. Growing a lawn does.
Now, I know what you are thinking. You think that is pretty basic. You have seen that for yourself, noticed your parents losing sleep over it, and possibly heard someone talk about it before—but in a world where timing is everything, it makes more sense to me now than ever before.
I do all I know to do to produce lush green grass, but sometimes it is not enough. I can water, fertilize, aerate, and edge—yet it sometimes isn’t enough.
On the other hand, I don’t have to cultivate weeds at all. They don’t need my permission or my assistance. They show up and begin to take over. If I ignore them, they still dominate. If I try to starve them they somehow find nourishment. Even when I try to poison them, I have to be steady in my attack or they will spring back to life.
This is a very clear picture of my spiritual life. The good things in life like faith, courage, and boldness take effort and intentional energy on my part. Strength and conviction takes focus and perspective.
However, the negative things in life—those things that attack faith and steal joy—don’t take discipline, energy, or desire.
As I was sitting looking at my lawn I realized that if I do nothing, the weeds win. Neglect ensures their victory—the same is true for spiritual things. If I do nothing—if I let apathy steal my spiritual energy and desire to pursue my Creator—the weeds win. My faith will struggle and my convictions will disappear. My relationships will struggle and my attitudes will begin to slip.
I realize that if I am going to be the person that I want to be, I am going to have a long-term commitment to cultivating the right things with a focus on fending off the wrong things. That commitment will help me make decisions. That realization will keep me moving forward.
I want my grass to be green and my faith to be strong. Neither are easy, but both are worth the investment. Don’t you agree?
