Ok, let's start...at the beginning.
Just because the will to war has been discovered and the calling embraced does not mean victory is ensured. Many would-be warriors do not live successful and stable lives because they avoid the preparation that moves them from hopeful to capable, from people with potential to ones fulfilling promise.
The ones who will overcome sin, shed light into dark areas, and shape their generation are the ones that understand that God will shape them in private as He prepares them to be used in public (check out Sean's message: Radical Solitude). This is the process that builds the warrior, sculpts his faith, and molds his life.
This is the method that God used to shape Samson into the man who (although he is not recorded as fighting in any skirmishes) spoke prophetically to God's people. He lived his life in boldness not matter the circumstances. This is why I list him among the warriors who inspire me.
Samuel was not always bold- as a matter of fact, the Bible records a time when he was confused and meek. A gift from God to a barren mother, he was dedicated back to the Lord as a young child. He was set apart for service before the Lord.
When God glanced at the child Samuel, He knew why He created him- to anoint Kings, train prophets, listen to and speak for the Lord, and tain the people of God- but He saw one who was not ready to fulfill his full purpose.... you can read the rest of this in Chapter 2 of The Warrior Way
